Poland, Lithuania and Ukraine to form brigade for UN, EU and NATO peacekeeping m
Posted on Tuesday, November 17 @ 18:07:22 CET by janina

General Anonymous writes "The Poles and Lithuanians are trying to create something not seen since 1795 - a fighting unit that also includes Ukrainians.

By Corky Siemaszko

Under the plan, the three countries would form a brigade that would take part in United Nations and European Union-sponsored peacekeeping missions. It would also serve under the auspices of NATO.

"This reflects our support for Ukraine," Polish deputy defense minister Stanislaw Komorowski said after signing a letter of intent to form the unit. "We want to tie Ukraine closer to Western structures, including military ones."

Poland and Lithuania are in NATO and have been pushing to bring Ukraine into the fold. NATO's pledge to some day admit the former Soviet republic outraged the Russians.

A NATO spokesman said Moscow has no reason to be miffed by the Polish/Lithuanian overture to Ukraine.

"There is absolutely no reason why cooperation between individual allies and Ukraine should not be stepped up," said the spokesman, James Appathurai.

There are, however, historic reasons why this could rankle the Russians.
