SECURITY OVERVIEW

 

THE GENERAL SITUATION IN THE MISSION AREA HAS AGAIN BEEN DESTABILIZED BY THE CONTINUING UNREST IN MITROVICA.

 

PRISTINA REGION

 

The following incidents occurred on 12 February.

 

GRENADE ATTACK

At 2100 hrs, unidentified suspects threw a grenade into the yard of an Albanian in OBILIC. The explosion caused structural damage but no injuries.

 

ARSON

AT 1830 hrs, a house owned by Serbs was set on fire in KOSOO POLJE. No injuries reported.

 

ARMED ROBBERY

At 1200 hrs, while driving a taxi, an Albanian male was stopped by unidentified armed suspects and robbed of money in PRISTINA.

 

EXPLOSION

At 0525 hrs, there was an explosion at Miami Beach club in PRISTINA. The device was planted along the foundation of the building. The building was substantially damaged. No injuries reported.

 

INTIMIDATION

At 1300 hrs, an unidentified suspect threatened a female KFOR interpreter (Albanian) in front of her office in PRISTINA. The suspect claimed to be a KPC/TMK expert and was aware of all her activities. He also threatened to blow up the station and kill her.

 

ARRESTS

Five suspects were arrested within the past 24 hrs in Pristina Region. One for aggravated assault, 3 for murder and one for threatening behavior.

 

The following incidents occurred on 13 February.

 

GRENADE ATTACK

At 2130 hrs, unidentified suspects threw a hand grenade at a house owned by Serbs in KOSOVO POLJE. No injuries reported.

 

ASSAULT

At 2310 hrs, the driver of a vehicle refused to stop while asked to do so for speeding in PRISTINA. The vehicle was stopped in DARDANIJA. During the arrest the suspect grabbed the officer’s weapon causing it to fire one shot. No injuries reported. Suspect was arrested.

 

ILLEGAL POSSESSION OF WEAPON

At 0845 hrs, a Serb was found in possession of a handgun onboard a train to MITROVICA. No further information.

 

DEAD BODY

At 1650 hrs, human remains were found in GRDOVAC. The remains were believed to have been there since the war.

 

ARRESTS

Four suspects were arrested within the past 24 hours in the Pristina Region. One for DWI, one for attempted murder/assault, one for possession of a weapon and one for aggravated assault on Police Officer and DWI.

GNJILANE REGION

 

The following incidents occurred on 12 February.

 

SHOOTING

AT 2300 hrs, Russian KFOR soldiers were shot at in RAJANOVACKA CUKA. The suspects fled the scene, leaving behind an M-80 explosive simulator, an RPG, a AK-47 magazine and two hand grenades.

 

KIDNAPPING

AT 1115 hrs, an Albanian female was abducted on 10 February at 2030 hrs, according to a report filed. After the kidnapping the victim was taken to a village near PRIZREN and was raped. She managed to escape on 12 February at 0500 hrs.

 

INTIMIDATION

AT 1240 hrs, several individuals threatened an Albanian male in SIPASNICA. KFOR detained two Serb males.

 

ARRESTS

KFOR arrested 3 individuals, one for theft, one for assault and one for auto theft.

 

The following incidents occurred on 13 February.

 

ASSAULT

At 1930 hrs, two Albanian males in a car were blocked by another car with two Albanian males in GNJILANE. During the fight, one of the Albanians was hit with an unidentified object several times. The victim sustained injuries and was transported to the hospital.

 

At 1930 hrs, while parking a car, an Albanian male was approached by another Albanian male and assaulted with a knife in GNJILANE. The victim sustained minor injuries and transported to the hospital.

 

ARRESTS

Nine individuals were arrested. KFOR arrested 8, seven for curfew violations and one for drunk driving. UNMIK Police arrested one for illegal activities.

PRIZREN REGION

 

The following incident occurred on 13 February.

 

INTIMIDATION

At 1600 hrs, a male, ethnicity unknown, found a note at his garden entrance in ORAHOVAC, saying that he and his family would be killed.

 

The following incidents occurred on 12 February.

 

ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES

At 1356 hrs, two KPC/TMK members brought two Albanian males to UNMIK Police in ORAHOVAC. The KPC members informed UNMIK Police that the suspects were believed to be stealing at a market. No witnesses or complaints were received. Both suspects denied any wrongdoing but were under the influence of hashish. Prior to being brought to UNMIK Police, the suspects were taken to KPC building and searched. The suspects claimed the loss of 110 DM, taken by KPC members.

 

TRAFFIC ACCIDENT

At 1830 hrs, there was a traffic accident on route “Horse” 15 km from Prizren. Two cars and a tractor were involved. Eight persons were injured.

 

ARRESTS

KFOR arrested 9 individuals over the 48 hour period for curfew violations.

MITROVICA REGION

 

The following incidents occurred on 12 February.

 

SHOOTING/EXPLOSION

Unidentified suspects shot at a house in MITROVICA NORTH. A hand grenade was exploded in a garden. No injuries were reported

 

BURGLARY

At 1900 hrs, unidentified suspects broke into a house rented by an UNMIK Police officer in MITROVICA North. At the time of the incident the officer was on leave.

 

The following incidents occurred on 13 February.

 

ASSAULT

At 1515 hrs, while escorting passengers from KOSOVO POLJE  to MITROVICA by UN train, an UNMIK Police officer sustained injuries to his eye in MITROVICA. The incident occurred when children aged from 7 to 12 years threw rocks and broke a window. Automatic gunfire was also heard approximately 200 meters in front of the train. KFOR soldiers were deployed. The gunfire was found to have come between a group of Serbs and Albanians. No further injuries reported. The train turned back.

 

SNIPER/GRENADE ATTACK

An Albanian sniper was neutralized by KFOR.

 

A grenade device was thrown at an UNMIK Police officer but did not explode.

PEC REGION

 

The following incidents occurred on 12 February.

 

MURDER

At 1700 hrs, unidentified suspects shot and killed an Albanian male in KOSURIC.

 

DRUGS

At 1700 hrs, UNMIK Police arrested three Albanian males for illegal possession of 10 kg of marijuana in PEC.

 

ILLEGAL POSSESSION OF WEAPONS

At 1140 hrs, KFOR arrested an Albanian male for illegal possession of 2 assault rifles and ammunition in PEPSA.

 

ARMED ROBBERY

At 2130 hrs, three unidentified armed males entered the THW (NGO) office in PEC through a window and took 500,000 DM from a safe. No injuries reported.

 

The following incidents occurred on 13 February.

 

ILLEGAL POSSESSION OF WEAPON

At 0100 hrs, UNMIK Police and KFOR arrested an Albanian male for illegal possession of an AK-47 rifle and ammo in KOSURIC.

 

ARRESTS

KFOR arrested two individuals for possession of weapons and three for possession of drugs.

BORDER POLICE

 

The following incidents occurred on 12 February.

 

INTIMIDATION

An Albanian male threatened an interpreter in GENERAL JANKOVIC border crossing. The suspect refused to show his passport and resisted arrest.

 

SHOOTING/EXPLOSION

On 11 February at 1635 hrs, several shots from automatic weapons were heard in VRBNICA border crossing. There was also an explosion. The incidents occurred about 2 km inside Albanian border. No further information.

 

ILLEGAL CROSSING

Three Albanians were seen illegally crossing from Albania to Kosovo in VRBNICA border crossing. KFOR fired 51 warning shots and the intruders retreated to Albania.

 

The following incidents occurred on 13 February.

 

UNSAFE MOVEMENT

 Four UN buses were driven directly to the apron of the runway to pick up 100 new UNMIK Police officers in PRISTINA Airport. They did not inform KFOR or Border Police prior to entry and posed a threat to an airbus which landed shortly after that with nearly 100 passengers on board.

 

SMUGGLING

At 2200 hrs, while assisting customs, UNMIK Police located 12 shotguns and 1,250 rounds of ammunition on a passenger of a bus at GENERAL JANKOVICA border crossing. The bus was coming from Turkey along with five other buses. All buses were searched. The owner was identified and arrested. Contact KFOR Press.
