SECURITY OVERVIEW

 

The general situation in the mission area remained calm.

Grenade attacks were reported in GNJILANE, PRIZREN and PEC Regions.

 

PRISTINA REGION

 

The following incidents occurred at the 26th of February

 

RECKLESS DRIVING

At 1635 hrs, three Albanian males were arrested after they attempted to run over several UNMIK police officers controlling traffic at an intersection. The suspects drove recklessly nearly hitting several children and attempted to elude Police.

 

CARJACKING

At 2010 hrs, a male Serb was stopped by three men in military uniform and was thrown out from the car in GRACANICA (Grid: EN 096 271). The suspects fled the scene. UNMIK Police are investigating.

 

GRIEVOUS ASSAULT

At 2144 hrs, an Albanian male was found shot in the village of MUHADZER BABUS (Grid: EN 150 130). The victim was transported to PRISTINA hospital. No further details available for the moment. The investigation is ongoing.

 

 

The following incidents occurred at the 27th of February

 

GRENADE ATTACK

At 1915 hrs, there was a report of an explosion at a Serb owned house in KOSOVO POLJE (Grid: 077 208). No casualties. UNMIK Police and KFOR discovered a grenade clip at a scene of the incident. The investigation is ongoing.

 

ILLEGAL POSSESSION OF WEAPONS

At 0615 hrs, an Albanian male was arrested by KFOR for illegal possession of weapon. One shotgun and ammunition were confiscated.

 

 

 

 

ARRESTS

Eighteen individuals were arrested within the past 48 hours in PRISTINA Region. Three suspects were arrested for reckless endangerment, three persons were arrested for illegal possession of weapons, one suspect was arrested for armed robbery and one for assaulting a police officer/resisting arrest.

Six persons were arrested for threatening behavior, one for attempted burglary, one for auto theft. One suspect was arrested for assault/robbery, one for attempted murder.

GNJILANE REGION

 

The following incidents occurred at the 26th of February

ILLEGAL POSSESSION OF WEAPONS

At 1030 hrs, KFOR searched an Albanian house in the village of STREZOVCE (Grid: EN 406 230) and recovered one M-48 rifle, two detonators, KLA/UCK uniforms and assorted ammunition. KFOR is investigating.

 

ATTEMPTED MURDER

At 0930 hrs a Serb male was shot at and sustained serious injuries in GNJILANE. The victim was evacuated to Camp Bondsteel.

 

ARSON

At 0700 hrs an Albanian owned restaurant was reported to be on fire in GNJILANE. No injuries were reported. The building was damaged.

 

GRENADE ATTACK

At 1835 hrs two hand grenades were thrown in the yard of two neighboring Serb owned houses in GNJILANE. No injuries were reported. Minor damaged caused by the explosions. The case is under investigation.

 

ARMED ROBBERY

At 1930 hrs an Albanian male reported that an unidentified armed suspect (ethnicity was not ascertained) got into the rear of his car on the road from GNJILANE to PRISTINA and took his wallet with 190 DM. The case is under investigation.

 

The following incidents occurred at the 27th of February

THREATS

At 1010 hrs, an Albanian female and two Albanian males threatened to kill a Serb female in GNJILANE. The case is under investigation.

 

ASSAULT

At 1955 hrs, two unidentified Albanian males assaulted an Albanian male in GNJILANE. The case is under investigation.

 

ARSON

At 1115 hrs, unidentified suspects set an Albanian owned car on fire in the village of RANILUG (Grid: EN 49 05). The case is under investigation.

 

BOMB ATTACK

At 1700 hrs, an unidentified passenger of a blue OPEL “ASCONA” threw two connected anti-tank mines over the gates of an abandoned Serb owned house in VITINA (Grid: EM 2962 8509). The blasting caps exploded, but the mines didn’t detonate. No injuries were reported. The case is under investigation.

 

 

 

EXPLOSION

At 2030 hrs, an Albanian male was injured in GNJILANE while handling an unidentified type of explosive device, which exploded. The suspect/victim was taken to the hospital for treatment. The case is under investigation.

 

ARRESTS

21 individuals were arrested within the last 48 hours. UNMIK Police arrested 3 individuals for assault and one individual for car theft.

KFOR arrested 17 individuals: 14 - for curfew violation, two – for illegal possession of weapon and one – for threat.

PRIZREN REGION

 

The following incidents occurred at the 26th of February

 

GRENADE ATTACK

At 2348 hrs a hand grenade was thrown at an Albanian owned restaurant in ORAHOVAC. No injuries were reported as the business was closed at the time of the incident. The property was damaged. The case is under investigation.

 

ILLEGAL POSSESSION OF WEAPON

At 1330 hrs UNMIK Police conducted a search operation at an Albanian owned house in the village of KUKLIBEG (Grid: DM 772 652). An M48 rifle and a portable metal detector were found. The owner was arrested. The case is under investigation.

 

 

MISSING PERSON

An Albanian female was reported missing since 24/02/00. The case is under investigation.

 

 

The following incidents occurred at the 27th of February

 

GRENADE ATTACK

At 2030 hrs, unidentified suspect(s) threw a hand grenade at an Albanian owned grocery store in ORAHOVAC (Grid: DM 72 94). Two persons were inside, but no injuries were reported. The store was extensively damaged. The case is under investigation.

 

ILLEGAL POSSESSION OF WEAPON/KIDNAPPING

At 2135 hrs, an Albanian male was arrested for illegal possession of weapon. One pistol and ammo were confiscated.

 

THREATENING BEHAVIOR

At 1835 hrs, an identified Albanian male threatened to kill another Albanian male in SOPINA (Grid: DM 870 870). The case is under investigation.

 

ARRESTS

Nine individuals were arrested. KFOR arrested five individuals for curfew violation. UNMIK Police arrested three individuals for illegal possession of weapon; one – for kidnapping/rape.

MITROVICA REGION

The following incidents occurred at the 26th of February

ILLEGAL HOUSE OCCUPATION

There were four reports about illegal house occupation within the past 24 hours. In all cases Albanian owned property was occupied by Serbs in MITROVICA North. UNMIK Police are investigating.

 

The following incidents occurred at the 27th of February

BURGLARY

At 1015 hrs, UNMIK Police responded to burglary call in MITROVICA North. Two suspects (male Serbs) were arrested at the scene of crime. One suspect managed to escape after a short foot pursuit. The investigation is pending.

 

FORTHCOMING EVENTS

The general situation in MITROVICA Region had change quickly from calm to tense and unstable as a number of significant public events are expected in the coming days:

1.       On 28/02/200 at 1100 hrs, a public meeting will be held in the village of LIKOSAN (Grid: 927 277), in memory of 24 Albanians killed on 28/02/1998 by Serbian troops.

2.       On 05/03/2000, in SRBICA, there will be a commemoration of the killing of KLA/UCK hero Adem Jashari.

3.       On 28/02/2000, large demonstration is planned to celebrate KLA/UCK Liberation Day.

 

PEC REGION

The following incidents occurred on 25/02/00

 

GRENADE ATTACK

At 0100 hrs an uncompleted Albanian house was reported to be on fire in SOPOT (Grid: DN 523 007). Prior to the fire an explosion and some automatic gunfire were heard during the night. According to local residents, the same house three days earlier had one grenade thrown into it causing no injuries.

 

ILLEGAL POSSESSION WEAPONS

At 2240 hrs in JUNIK (Grid: 40 02) KFOR confiscated one AK-47 rifle and ammunition from an vehicle. The suspect, Albanian male, was arrested.

 

The following incidents occurred on 26/02/00

 

THEFT

At 0750 hrs, in ISTOK (Grid: DN 48 11) KFOR arrested two male Albanians while stealing from a shop.

 

ARSON

At 2330 hrs, a Roma owned shop was set on fire in DAKOVICA (Grid: DM 530 923) by unidentified perpetrator(s). At the crime scene UNMIK Police found clear evidence of the arson. The fire was extinguished. No injuries were reported.

 

EXPLOSION

At 2305 hrs, four explosions were heard near the KFOR compound in BANJA (Grid: DN 50 29). No casualties were reported, only minor damage to the post office and an abandoned house. No further information available.

 

ARRESTS

Three individuals were arrested in PEC Region within the last 48 hours. One person was arrested for illegal possession of weapons and other two for theft.

 

No significant criminal events were reported for 27/02/2000.

BORDER POLICE

 

“PRISTINA” AIRPORT

An Albanian male was refused to depart to Switzerland due to a false passport.  The passport was seized.
