SECURITY OVERVIEW

 

The general situation in the mission area remained tense.

An Orthodox Monastery was attacked with mortars in PEC Region. A passenger bus hit a planted mine on the road north of MITROVICA.

 

PRISTINA REGION

 

The following incident occurred on 27/02/2000

 

THREATS / INTIMIDATION

A male Serb was verbally threatened by a group of ten youngsters in KOSOVO POLJE. No injuries were reported.

 

The following incident occurred on 28/02/2000

 

GRENADE ATTACK

At 0040 hrs, a grenade was thrown at a Serbian residence in LIPLJAN (Grid: EN 100 130). The attack caused some material damage, nobody was injured. UNMIK Police are investigating.

 

ARMED ROBBERY

At 0330 hrs, unidentified suspects armed with a gun and hand grenade had forced a security guard of the “Saudi Joint Relief Committee for Kosovo” to open the main entrance and stole some items.

 

TRAFFIC ACCIDENT

At 1250 hrs, an overloaded passenger bus had swerved to avoid a collision and ended up in a ditch near GLOGOVAC (Grid: 918 224). 29 passengers were injured, one of them seriously.

 

ARRESTS

Four individuals were arrested within the past 24 hours in PRISTINA Region. Two suspects were arrested for auto theft, one for burglary and one for illegal possession of weapons.

GNJILANE REGION

PRIZREN REGION

 

The following incidents occurred on 27/02/00

 

ARMED ASSAULT

At 2330 hrs, unidentified suspect(s) in a white car fired several rounds from an automatic pistol at a vehicle on the road near ORAHOVAC (Grid: DM 74 91). The car was damaged, but no injuries were reported. The case is under investigation.

 

The following incidents occurred on 28/02/00

 

SHOOTING / EXPLOSION

At 0200 hrs, some shots were fired and an explosion was heard in ORAHOVAC (Grid: DM 74 91). No injuries were reported. The exact location was not determined. The case is under investigation.

 

ILLEGAL POSSESSION OF WEAPON

At 1840 hrs, KFOR searched two vehicles at the checkpoint in VELIKA HOCA (Grid: DM 738 938). Five pistols, a revolver and 43 rounds of ammo were confiscated. One suspect was arrested by KFOR. The case is under investigation.

 

ARRESTS

Three individuals were arrested. KFOR arrested an individual for illegal possession of weapon. UNMIK Police arrested 2 individuals: one – for kidnapping and one – for rape.

MITROVICA REGION

 

TERRORIST ACT

At 0630 hrs, an explosion took place on the main road from MITROVICA to ZVECAN, 500 meters north from MITROVICA (Grid: DN 880 502). A bus Mitrovica - Kraljevo exploded after hitting a mine, which had been put at a pit on a hard surface. The bus was seriously damaged. Fortunately, no people were injured, as there were no passengers inside. UNMIK Police and KFOR are investigating.

 

ASSAULT ON UNMIK POLICE OFFICERS

At 1250 hrs, two UNMIK Police officers were assaulted by a group of Serbs in MITROVICA North. The incident occurred, when they tried to rescue an Albanian woman, who had been stoned by several Serbian youngsters. KFOR was dispatched to the scene and brought the situation under control. One UNMIK Police officer received minor injury.

 

ILLEGAL HOUSE OCCUPATION

There were eight reports about illegal house occupation within the past 24 hours. In all cases Albanian owned property was occupied by Serbs in MITROVICA North. UNMIK Police are investigating.

PEC REGION

The following incidents occurred on 27/02/00

                                                                                        

ARSON                                                                                                

At 2000 hrs, a car was set on fire by unknown person(s) in PEC. No suspects were reported.

 

MORTAR ATTACK 

At 2010 hrs, some unknown person(s) attacked an orthodox monastery in DECANI (Grid: DN 418 109) with mortars. No injuries or property damage was reported.

 

ILLEGAL POSSESSION OF WEAPONS / AMMUNITION

At 2135 hrs, in MORINES (Grid: DM 36 95) KFOR arrested an Albanian Policeman for carrying a pistol.            

 

The following incidents occurred on 28/02/00

 

ASSAULT

At 1130 hrs, in KALIQAN (Grid: DN 470 340), an Albanian male was attacked by his neighbors. The victim sustained minor injuries.

 

ROBBERY

At 1230 hrs, in DAKOVICA an Albanian male was arrested for theft and attempted robbery.

 

ILLEGAL POSSESSION OF WEAPONS / AMMUNITION

At 1615 hrs in VELIK DURDEVIK (Grid DN 72 17) KFOR confiscated one rifle, ammunition, three NBC masks and one binocular from a male Albanian. The suspect was arrested.
