SECURITY OVERVIEW

 

THE GENERAL SITUATION IN THE MISSION AREA IS STABLE.

A riot in CAGLOVICA (PRISTINA Region) caused some tension in the Mission area. After negotiations the crowd dispersed peacefully.

 

 

PRISTINA REGION

 

VEHICLE HIJACKING

At 1920 hrs, it was reported that three unknown individuals wearing black masks and long leather jackets kicked a female and stole her vehicle in PRISTINA. The suspects were driving a black Mercedes Benz with a German license plates. The victim’s vehicle was a red Yugo.  

 

ARRESTS    

Eleven individuals were arrested in PRISTINA within the past 24 hours. Three individuals were arrested for theft. Two individuals were arrested for auto theft. And two individuals were arrested for the illegal possession of a weapon. Four suspects were arrested for involvement in a previous incident of assault.

 

RIOT

UNMIK Police in LIPLJAN conducted a house search in M. ALAS village. Four suspects were arrested for involvement in a previous incident of assault. A handgun was seized.

A major traffic hold was caused by the diverting of traffic through LIPLJAN, due to the riot in the village of CAGLAVICA on rout “Hawk” that occurred after the traffic accident between an Albanian and Serbian drivers. At some point an unidentified subject fired an RPG at one of the vehicles. No casualties were reported. At 21.30 hrs, the situation was brought under control and the crowd dispersed peacefully.

 

NEW UNMIK POLICE INITIATIVES

 

A new UNMIK Police Station was open in SLIVOVO (Grid: 262 175) PRISTINA Region.

 

 

GNJILANE REGION

 

 

NO REPORT RECEIVED DUE TO COMMUNICATION FAILURE

PRIZREN REGION

 

ARMED ROBBERY/GRIEVOUS ASSAULT

At 1655 hrs, two masked subjects broke into the residence of a Turkish couple in PRIZREN and assaulted a 53-year-old female. The suspects robbed the Turkish female and attacked her with a knife. The victim sustained non-life threatening injuries to her head, face, both hands and throat. The suspects fled the scene. The case is under investigation.

 

ARMED ROBBERY

At 1200 hrs, UNMIK Police received a report that on 17/01/00 5 masked males came to the house of a Albanian male in CELINA (Grid: DM 70 87) and robbed 5,800 DM of him. The suspects were armed with AK-47 rifles and threatened to kill the complainant’s family if he didn’t give them more money. The suspects fled the scene. No injuries reported. The case is under investigation. 

 

ABDUCTION

At 1000 hrs, it was reported that 4 unidentified males forced an Albanian juvenile into a van in front of the primary school in ORAHOVAC. The victim was driven to PRIZREN through two KFOR checkpoints and then he was released. The case is under investigation.

 

ARRESTS

UNMIK Police arrested an ethnic Albanian for possession of stolen property.

 

 

MITROVICA REGION

 

GRENADE ATTACK (FOLLOW-UP)

On 20/01/00, two Serb juveniles (17-year-old) were injured in MITROVICA North and were taken to the hospital. One of the victims sustained serious injuries. According to the witnesses, four Albanian males approached the group of juveniles, playing basketball, and one of the Albanians threw a hand grenade. Two Albanian males were arrested by KFOR. On 21/01/00, the investigation revealed that the juveniles were playing with their own grenade. The Albanian males arrested by KFOR were released.

 

ASSAULTS

·         At 1115 hrs, an Albanian juvenile in D. KLINA was assaulted by three Albanian males, his neighbors. No injuries were reported. The case is under investigation.

·         At 1200 hrs, an Albanian (gender was not reported) was assaulted by juvenile males (ethnicity was not ascertained) in MITROVICA North.

 

 

DEMONSTRATION

250 Serbs protested in front of the court building in MITROVICA North against the laws and court system. No incidents were reported.

 

HUNGER STRIKE

Thirty-five Serb and 3 Roma detainees carry on with their hunger strike. The protest is against the court decision to extend their detention.

 

PEC REGION

 

ILLEGAL POSSESSION OF WEAPON

KFOR reported that during a search operation near Cafa Morina border crossing (Grid: DM 37 95) 2 anti-personnel mines, numerous explosive devices, an anti-tank missile, 5 assault rifles, a pistol, NBC equipment and ammo were confiscated. Two Albanian males were arrested.

 

ARRESTS

KFOR arrested two Albanian males for illegal possession of weapon.

All border crossings are open. However, road conditions are hazardous due to snow and ice. Snow chains are highly recommended.
