UNMIK POLICE ON THE WORLDWIDE WEB
By
Bruce Lloy, UNMIK Police Spokesperson
If you have not heard the good news, the very first Civpol Web
Page is on the “Net” under the banner “UNMIK POLICE”.
Simply type: www.civpol.org and you will find a link to
UN International Police in Kosovo.
Produced within Press & Public Information, Office of the
Commissioner, it is the brainchild of Poland's, Andrzej Stepien.
He has spent countless hours working the creative and
technological end. He has received excellent support from
Joachim Schmitz (Germany) who looks after the detailed
statistical information and Larry Guyton (USA) who produces our
Newsletter and Daily Press Update. These three officers have
been and continue to be wonderful assets to the page.
Currently we receive close to 3,000 per day to the site. As we
expand our links this will surely increase. Our Guest Book has
been signed by people from South and North America as well as
Continental Europe. We are confident other parts of the world
will soon be tuned into our site.
To assist in reaching all continents, the Message Board has been
added recently. Here you can send messages to fellow officers,
past mission partners, friends and family. They can also visit
the site and leave messages or answer a posted message. This
section of the Web Page was designed to help officers from prior
missions stay in touch or locate each other and also to let
officers stay better in touch with their families and home
departments.
Although this valuable 20th century information system works
from our unit, it is the property of all civilian police
officers; past, resent and future. We encourage you to visit
your site and advise others. You are also invited to
submit material useful in getting the UNMIK Police story to the
world. Regional Media Liaison Officers are presently documenting
their regions via digital cameras. Space permitting, we plan to
feature each region as extensively as possible.
We are proud to produce this page on behalf of all International
Police Officers. It will be as good as the information
available. So, get on board, help us show the world the work
accomplished by UNMIK and CIVPOL mission personnel.

UNMIK POLICE OFFICERS HELP CITIZENS
Contributed
by Vincent Moulter.
Recently, Vincent Moulter, the Prizren Region Media Relations
Coordinator learned of another effort by UNMIK Police officers
who went above and beyond the call of duty to help a family in
need.
Like so many of the officers who do good deeds here in Kosovo,
these officers asked for no recognition and even requested that
they remain anonymous.
During a patrol in the fall of 1999, these officers met a family
that had lost its house when a NATO bomb missed its target and
destroyed the home in early January of 1999.
At the time of the explosion, one family member, a 21 year-old
man, was disabled and had a leg amputated.
To help the young man become mobile and self sufficient again,
family members in Germany, with the help of UNMIK Police
officers, managed to arrange for the shipment of a special
vehicle, that was equipped to help disabled persons.
To register the vehicle in Kosovo, the office of the AIG
Insurance Company in Prizren was contacted and immediately lent
its support.
The family, UNMIK Police and AIG Insurance, worked together and
obtained the proper documentation and insurance to get the
vehicle registered and on the road.
This is just one of many examples of officers being unsung
hero's to the people of Kosovo.

CTO TRAVELS IN GREECE ARE EASIER
Do
you want to get out of Kosovo for your next CTO but have not
decided where to go? Then you might want to consider Greece as
your next CTO site.
Greece is a land long known for its beautiful mountains,
scenic beaches and hundreds of islands. Greece has a rich
history and there are many historical sites worth taking the
time to see.
Greek food has to be experienced to be appreciated. Seafood is
a specialty with the Greeks and they are some of the world's
best at preparing the sea's bountiful harvest.
The area around Katerini, which is 70 kilometers south of
Thessoloniki is already familiar to many officers who have
helped transport vehicles to Kosovo from Italy.
There are several ways to get to Greece. A daily train runs
from Skopje Macedonia to Thessoloniki Greece. There are also
several travel agencies that offer driving services from
Skopje to Thessoloniki. Prices on these modes of travel, range
from as low as 40 DM for the train to as high as 300 DM for a
taxi.
There is also a weekend bus run sponsored by OSCE that leaves
Pristina at 1630 hrs. on Friday and arrives in Thessoloniki at
0100 hrs. The bus returns to Pristina on Sunday afternoons and
arrives in Pristina around midnight. Cost for this service is
100 DM for a round trip ticket. You do not have to return on
the same weekend but can come back the following Sunday if you
have longer than a weekend to enjoy Greece.
Mita Travel of Olympic Beach has also started a holiday
package for interested travelers. Olympic beach is located
just down from Katerini and Paralia Beach.
This package includes round trip bus travel and six days,
seven nights accommodation in hotels or apartments in Olympic
beach. The price includes the travel, rooms and a breakfast. A
Greek folk night is also provided. The price for this package
is 450 DM. You leave Pristina on Saturday and return the
following Saturday.
If you are interested in either the OSCE bus or Mita Travel
Package contact the Press and Public Information Office,
Police Main Headquarters, Pristina, Third floor, Room 71 or
call 5032. We can provide more information on these two modes
of travel to Greece.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD STORIES
By
Bruce Lloy, UNMIK Police Spokesperson
Each week, Larry Guyton writes the UNMIK Police Newsletter.
This is no easy task. He is to be complemented for his
diligence in finding interesting and informative stories that
appeal to our readers.
But as Larry and I have often discussed, we feel we are only
scrapping the bottom of the barrel. We are quite confident
each Region has a story to tell, a story officer's wish told
and they would appreciate reading in the Newsletter. And, this
same Newsletter is added to our Internet Web Page providing
worldwide coverage!
UNMIK Police is full of creative writers, storytellers,
journalists or just plain, old fashioned, editorialists. So,
share your knowledge. Tell us what is happening in your
region. Provide Larry with human-interest stories, good Police
deeds, pain and sorrow events. We want it all.
We value your input and with your assistance the Newsletter
will continue to meet the needs of the International Police
officers and its readers. Articles can be faxed to Press &
Public Information office at VSAT 5073 or dropped by our
office on the third floor of Main Headquarters in Pristina,
Room 71. You can also call us at extension 5071.
