UNMIK Police Regions

International police personnel are deployed province wide. The mission area is divided into five regions. The UNMIK Police headquarters are in Pristina. There are also five regional headquarters in Pristina, Pec, Gnjilane, Prizren and Mitrovica. The regional HQ supervise police stations located in their area of responsibility.

The border police  is stationed at border crossings and the Slatina airport.

Pristina Region
This Region is the biggest one. Approximately 1/3 of the Kosovo population live in Pristina. The general situation in the Region is stable. Violence against minorities is continuing but with dropping tendency.  The three major minorities enclaves -  Kosovo Polje, Obilic, Gracanica - require special attention due to ethnic tensions.

Prizren Region
The general situation is stable. However, there are areas of special concern for UNMIK Police. In the Dragas and Orahovac municipalities the ethnic minorities continues to be intimidated.

Pec Region
The general situation is calm. Unfortunately, the minorities continue to be the target for crimes ranging from murder and robbery to theft and arson.

Gnjilane Region
Several hundred ethnic minorities villages are interspersed with Albanian villages resulting in constant state of tension.

Mitrovica Region
Mitrovica Region has the unique situation a predominate Serbian North and Albanian South. This region is prime for unrest and is very volatile.

Due to their tasks, border police is deployed along the international border and in the airport.
