The illegal importation of fuel and oil into Kosovo.
A
two-month joint investigation by the UNMIK Border Police and
UNMIK Customs has been completed into the illegal importation
of fuel and oil into Kosovo.
Beginning in March 2000 large quantities of fuel oil were
brought across the General Jankovic border point and the
importers presented falsified paperwork indicating that the
oil was humanitarian aid from a non-governmental organization
in the Prizren area. The material was actually destined for
the commercial market and should have been subject to customs
fees. The falsified paperwork exempted the material from these
fees.
The total amount of fuel imported was in excess of 4,000,000
litres with a wholesale value of over 1,535,000 Deutsche Mark.
The customs fees owing are over 675,000 Deutsche Mark.
A Kosovar Albanian from the General Jankovic (Hani Elezit)
area was summoned to speak to UNMIK Customs Authorities on 22
May 2000 but failed to appear. He has been re-summoned to
appear again on 06 June 2000.
