Andrzej STEPIEN, Pristina 4 Feb 2001.
Source: UNMIK Police Crime Analysis & Statistics, Situation Reports

Murders offences in the Yugoslav province have dropped since the summer of 1999, when UNMIK Police started their activity. Most of the murders happens in Pristina Region, because that is where the largest concentration of people live.

Murders rate in Kosovo is around five per week comparing to dozens in 1999. Much of this has to do with organized crime, revenge killings or political violence. Interethnic killing still exists but not at the number from the summer 1999. Many Serbs, who were majority ethnic group affected by this crime, fled the province or moved to enclaves, guarded around a clock by KFOR.

There has been an increase in politically motivated violence. More than two dozen people from various parties have been killed this year. There are some parties trying to jockey for power in the province.
